Born in Tokyo in 1965. Since graduating with honours from Tokyo University of the Arts, Faculty of Music, Department of Composition, Taro has been working mainly in film music.
He received the highest award by 1991 Silk Road International Orchestral Composition Competition (sponsored by Asahi Shimbun, UNESCO and others).
He is a winner of The Japan Academy Award for Best Original Music Score for ‘Chi to Hone (Blood and Bones, 2004)’, ‘Haru no Yuki (Spring Snow, 2005)’, ‘Semi Shigure (2005)’, ‘Rikyu ni Tazuneyo (Ask Rikyu, 2014)’, ‘Fukushima 50 (2020)’, and Mainichi Film Awards for ‘Yami no Kodomotachi (Children of the Dark, 2008)’.
Internationally, the film score of ‘Red Cliff 1 & 2 (2008-09)’ made him a nominee of 36th Saturn Award Music Award and a Best Musi Award winner of Hong Kong Film Award, and ‘Fukushima 50 (2020)’ won the IMFCA 2020 17th International Film and Music Critics Association Award.
Taro’s other film music works include ‘Memories of Murder (2003)’, ‘Naku Monka (No More Cry, 2009)’, ‘Commander-in-Chief Yamamoto Isoroku (2011)’, ‘Yurusarezaru Mono (Unforgiven, 2013)’, ‘The Crossing 1 & 2 (2014-15)’, ‘Museum (2016)’, ‘Manhunt (2017)’, ‘Kubo Ibuki (Aircraft Carrier Ibuki, 2019)’, ‘Newspaper Reporter (2019)’, ‘Mother (2020)’, ‘Yakuza and Family (2021)’, ‘Namo Naki Hi (Nameless Day, 2021)’ and ‘Kinema no Kamisama (God of Cinema (2021)’.
He also wrote scores for NHK’s Morning Drama series ‘Aguri’, NHK Special documentaries, and NHK Taiga Drama series ‘Aoi Tokugawa Sandai’ and ‘Yoshitsune.
